Taiwanese Deputy Foreign Minister François Wu says continued U.S. support for Taiwan is in America’s interest following President Donald Trump’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Wu argued that continued U.S. arms sales would help Taiwan maintain its self-defense capabilities, preserve its democratic system and allow its semiconductor industry to continue contributing to the global economy.
The comments come as China continues to pressure Taiwan and as the Trump administration weighs a pending $14 billion arms package. The U.S. approved an $11 billion arms sale to Taiwan in December 2025, while the additional $14 billion package remains under consideration.
Wu also said he had seen no indication of a change in U.S. policy toward Taiwan following the Trump-Xi summit.
