New Jersey Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell has resigned following an independent investigation into his conduct in office.
Gov. Mikie Sherrill announced Friday that she accepted Caldwell’s resignation after calling on him to step down. According to the investigation, Caldwell repeatedly violated state policy, breached ethics rules and was found to have engaged in sexual harassment.
The report also examined allegations that Caldwell made inappropriate romantic advances toward a staffer’s friend, made sexually charged remarks to a subordinate and used his influence in an effort to secure a state job promotion for his girlfriend.
Sherrill now has 45 days to appoint a new lieutenant governor under state law
