The Alternative for Germany (AfD) scored a historic victory in Sunday’s state election in Saxony-Anhalt, winning 43.8% of the vote and 39 of the 83 seats in the state legislature.
The party fell three seats short of an outright majority but emerged as the largest political force in the eastern German state. The result has intensified debate over Germany’s longstanding political “firewall,” under which mainstream parties have refused to cooperate with the AfD.
The AfD has campaigned on issues including immigration, economic concerns and changing Germany’s approach to Russia and Ukraine. The party is now exploring possible paths to forming a government, while Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s CDU has ruled out cooperation with the AfD.
