Florida officials have launched a criminal investigation into OpenAI over its chatbot ChatGPT and its alleged connection to a deadly mass shooting at Florida State University.
According to the state attorney general, investigators reviewed communications between the suspect and the AI system, which reportedly included discussions about firearms, ammunition, timing, and location. Authorities say the findings prompted a deeper probe to determine whether the company could bear criminal responsibility.
The shooting left two people dead and several others injured before the suspect was taken into custody. OpenAI has called the incident a tragedy, stating that ChatGPT provides factual responses and does not promote harmful or illegal behavior, and added that it cooperated with law enforcement after identifying the account involved.
